Our Work
Our In School mission is to help all girls attend school.
We use purpose-built technology to identify out-of-school girls and girls at risk of dropping out.
We provide monthly cash assistance to vulnerable girls so they can afford to go to school.
We connect girls with services they need to care for themselves and stay in school.
What We Do
We use our custom-developed management information system to identify out-of-school girls and in-school girls at risk of dropping out.
Then our outreach team works with the school leadership to connect directly with girls and their families to communicate the purpose of the cash transfer and set up their mobile money account.
We begin monthly cash transfers and use another of our custom-developed systems to monitor and track each transfer. The cash is conditional, meaning that for the family to receive it, the child must be regularly in class.
We monitor attendance through our management information system and use real time data to identify students with low attendance. Low attendance tells us that a girl needs additional support services to keep her in school such as
- Health care
- Disability services
- Counseling
Because of generous people like you, we repeat this process annually. If needed, monthly cash assistance continues until a girl completes senior secondary school, equivalent to grade 12 in the U.S.
Why Sierra Leone?
In School operates where we can have the greatest impact.
More than half of out-of-school girls are in Africa. And in Sierra Leone, girls are in crisis.
In Sierra Leone, 57% of people live in poverty. Nearly half of women have never attended school. This figure rises to 69% among women from the poorest households. Of the girls who make it to school, nearly 30% drop out by age 12. They are often forced into early marriage, child labor or worse.
This means girls are trapped in a cycle of hardship and missed opportunity.

The government of Sierra Leone is firmly invested in improving access to quality education nationwide, and we are proud to support this effort.
In fact, the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education is already using a management information system custom developed by our Corus technology experts to monitor attendance of teachers and students. The data from this system provides data that many countries simply don’t have. The system is currently used in 300 primary schools, and enables leaders to make informed decisions about budget allocation, teacher deployment and more.

What's Next
Data informs everything we do. Technology helps us maximize efficiency. Passion and commitment to our mission propels us to scale up what works.
Sierra Leone
Scale up to 100% of communities so every girl can attend school.
Mali
Launch cash assistance in communities with greatest need. Our management information system is already in use, helping the government identify girls at risk of dropping out.
Nigeria
Introduce our management information system, so education ministers can, for the first time, access insights about student attendance and identify girls who need support.
We can’t do it without you.
We rely on generous people like you, who share our passion and commitment to girls’ education. When you support In School, you stand for girls who have the odds stacked against them.
